What is veganism?

Throughout history, there have been many people who have done their best to live without animal products. However, the term vegan (pronounced VEE-guhn) was not defined until the 1940s by The Vegan Society. The word came from the first three and last two letters of vegetarian – “because veganism starts with vegetarianism and carries it through to its logical conclusion.” While being a vegetarian and/or plant-based is usually understood only in terms of diet, veganism is also a worldview and a moral commitment.

The Vegan Society defines veganism as, “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”

All animal agriculture, however traditional or well-intentioned, involves unnecessary, unjust, and cruel treatment of other sentient beings. No matter the label, animals farmed for profit are forced to endure painful mutilations, social deprivation, violation of their reproductive freedom, followed by slaughter.

When we choose not to buy products derived from animals, we make a stand for justice. Boycotting businesses that abuse animals for profit supports and shows that there is a demand for plant and mineral-based goods.

Going vegan is not just beneficial for the animals though. It’s also one of the best things that you can do for the environment and often results in great health benefits as well. To learn more about veganism, explore our favorites to Read & Watch and our Resource Links.
